Waldoboro — With whoopie pies, rest area and even pickle juice recovery shots at the end of the journey, why would any distance runner and walker not participate in the growing-in-popularity Waldoboro Day 5-kilometer road race?

Well, the hills are a challenge, of course, especially the long, gradual incline on Route 1 leading to the intersection before Moody's Diner, but there were downhill portions of the course at the start and finish of the trek that made the event on Saturday morning, June 15 a wonderful way to kick off the town's annual day.

More than 90 people participated in the 22nd annual event, which has grown steadily in popularity in recent years under the direction of Lucas McNelly.

Watch video and see more photos below.

Connor Daigle, 15, of Union outlegged Brigham Prescott, 37, of Portland for first. Daigle, who heads into his sophomore year at Medomak Valley High School in the fall, finished in 20:28 and Prescott just behind at 20:35.8.

It is believed Daigle, who, interestingly enough, is a strong 1,600-meter racewalker in high school track and field, is the youngest winner of the race, McNelly said.

Julia Bachelder, 32, of Portland was the first female finisher, as she crossed the tough, challenging 3.1-mile course in fifth at 22:26.9.

The year before McNelly took over the race there were nine runners in the event that has grown from that number to 45 three years ago, 73 last year and more than 90 this spring.

"The growth of this race is overwhelming and a real showcase of what makes Waldoboro special," McNelly said.

Two other notes from the event: Darren Winchenbach, a Waldoboro native and now of Saco, finished third for the third straight year and it marked the ninth consecutive year a Waldoboro native finished among the top three.

A portion of the runners'/walkers' entry fee went to Healthy Lincoln County’s Summer Meals program at Miller School and the Area Interfaith Outreach (AIO) Food Pantry’s “Backpack” program to help fight childhood food insecurity.

The race began and ended in downtown Waldoboro, as the course stretched to Pine Street, West Main Street, Mill Street, Jefferson Street, Atlantic Highway (Route 1) and back onto Main Street to the finish.

Runners also could participate in the event as a group, as the winning team earned a private tour and tasting at Odd Alewives Farm Brewery in the town .

There also was a “Rest Area” on the course, sponsored by Dow Furniture, a whoopie pie aid table, sponsored by Moody’s Diner, and pickle juice recovery shots at the finish, courtesy of Morse’s Sauerkraut.
