Youth charged with setting fire to car, stealing rifles

By Stephen Betts | Nov 22, 2020

Vinalhaven — A juvenile is being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland after police said he set fire to a car and stole rifles on Vinalhaven.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office responded around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, to a report of a 2004 Lincoln car on fire at the residence where a fatal stabbing occurred earlier this year. The vehicle, registered to 27-year-old Dorian Ames of Westbrook, was sitting in the yard of the residence since the incident.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, Deputy Josh Lemoi investigated two reports of rifles being stolen out of vehicles in the same vicinity of the car fire. Two guns were taken out of one truck and one stolen out of another at a different address.

Deputy Lemoi, Sgt. Arthur Smith and Detective Don Murray worked on the investigation most of that Saturday night and ended up recovering all stolen guns.

Sheriff Tim Carroll said thanks to community assistance and support, a juvenile was arrested related to all the events. The juvenile is held on violation of probation with multiple charges pending. He was transported to Long Creek Correctional Facility.

The investigation is ongoing with potentially more suspects involved, the sheriff said.
