Young Stars of Maine concert Father’s Day

Rockport — Bay Chamber Concerts has announced the 2018 Young Stars of Maine prizewinners. For more than 50 years, Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School has awarded prizes to recognize, encourage and reward young Maine music students who are serious in their study and performance of music.

The Young Stars of Maine Concert features this year’s seven winning performers in a free concert Sunday, June 17, at 4 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House, 6 Central St.

The Eleanor Erdman and Diane Nixon Vocal Excellence Prize is awarded to soprano Caroline Homer from Southwest Harbor. The recent graduate of SUNY Purchase University will perform works by Schubert and Stravinsky on the concert program.

The A. H. Chatfield, Jr. Piano Prize is awarded to Esme Power of Hope. Power studies piano with Laura Kargul at the University of Southern Maine and Matthew Mainster in Rockport.

Cellist Soren Nyhus of Waterville is the winner of the Summer Strings Music Prize. This is his second Young Stars award, having won last year for his piano performance. He will attend Harvard University this fall.

The Jean and Harvey Picker Senior Prize is given to Alice Hauser, a junior at Kennebunk High School. She will play Schubert’s Impromptu in G flat major for solo piano.

Fifteen year-old pianist Inga Zimba of Waterville is the winner of the Elsie Bixler Junior Prize. She has been studying the piano for 11 years with Lily Funahashi of Colby College.

The Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence is awarded to Daphne teBoekhorst, a junior at Cape Elizabeth High School. She has been recognized with several music honors including First Chair for Maine’s All-State orchestra.

The Nathan E. Corning Jazz Prize is awarded to Katie Oberholtzer, a junior at University of Southern Maine. She will offer her renditions of “Emily” by Johnny Mercer and “The Girl from Ipanema” by Antonio Joibin.

Every prize carries a $1,000 award in support of the further musical studies of each prizewinner. Donations will be accepted at the door of the free community concert to benefit Bay Chamber Music School’s scholarship and prize programs. For more information, visit baychamberconcerts.org.
