With talent from top to bottom, Oceanside tackles postseason dreams

Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Oceanside High School football team:

Coach/years coached current team: Wes Drinkwater, fifth year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 5-3, fourth in Class C North. The Mariners defeated No. 5 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 27-7 in the quarterfinals and lost to No. 1 Mount Desert Island 20-6 in the semifinals.

Roster: Seniors Mike Norton Jr. (running back, split back), Titus Kaewthong (quarterback, cornerback), Silas Miller (wide receiver), Jack Freeman (tight end, defensive end), Michael Dougherty (quarterback, free safety), Hunter Fowles (tight end, middle linebacker), Alex McLaughlin (fullback, guard), Kirt Ilvonen (center) and Oliver Vanorse-Jones (tackle, defensive tackle); juniors Trevor Reed (wide receiver, free safety), Dustin Cote (split back, wide receiver), Jacob Curtis (running back, middle linebacker), Brett Start (running back, split back), Ben Ripley (running back, split back), Zachariah Cody (running back, split back), Thomas Coombs (running back, defensive end), Alex Fogarty (wide receiver, middle linebacker), Anthony Dec (guard, defensive tackle), Brennan Harris (center, defensive tackle) and Sebastian Sanfilippo (tackle, defensive tackle); sophomoes Tim Mazzeo (wide receiver), Karl Ilvonen (wide receiver, quarterback), Nate Theroux (tackle, defensive end), Michael Yates (fullback, defensive end), Chris Carroll (guard, defensive end), Lucien Marriner (guard, defensive tackle) and Caleb Burns (tackle, defensive tackle); and freshmen Zach Healey (tight end, outside linebacker), Aidan Munro (running back, cornerback), Austin Pagano (split back, free safety), Elliot Lucier (quarterback, wide receiver), Landdon Willis (wide receiver, outside linebacker), Finnegan Lynch (running back, split back), Matt Herrold (tight end, outside linebacker), Andrew Secord (defensive end, center), Sam Miller (tackle, defensive end), Logan Jones (guard, defensive tackle), Joey Curtis (tight end, defensive end) and Nate Taylor (tight end, guard).

Known graduation losses: Gage Robinson, Mitchel DelFrate, Josef Berger, Chase Flaherty, Nate Raye, Nick Keene, David Kurr, Anthony Marsh, Robert Scott, Brandon DeBrosky and Sam Atwood.

Significant impact athletes: Norton, Freeman, Ripley, Kaewthong, Ilvonen, Vanorse-Jones and McLaughlin.

Team strengths: Solid core of returning players and new, exciting talent.

Team goal: To get better every week.

Top league opponents: Winslow and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

Outlook: Last season the Mariners picked up their first playoff win in school history. This year, after graduating several significant contributors, they hope for a return trip to the postseason “if we improve and grow as a team,” said Drinkwater.

Kaewthong is the new starting quarterback for Oceanside. Last season, Kaewthong, a soccer player, joined the team as a place kicker at the end of the regular season.
