With energy for cancer support, runners, walkers unite in Karen's 5K

Rockland — More than 40 runners and walkers took to the streets of Rockland on Saturday morning, Sept. 28 for the eighth annual Karen’s Run/Walk for Cancer 5-kilometer event.

This year, the Energy 4 Life event began and ended at the Rock Harbor Taproom and Brewery on Payne Avenue.

Darren Winchebach was the overall winner, and first male to cross the finish line at 19:29.

Jenna VanRyn was the first female finisher, as she was second overall across the 3.1-mile course in 21:18.

The event raises money through donations and sponsorships as proceeds go to the Energy 4 Life non-profit which helps area families who have members fighting cancer. Money also is donated to the Maine Cancer Foundation directed towards clinical research needed for cures to be found.

This year, the event raised $11,000. It was the highest amount since its first year in 2012.
