Winter art opening at Maine Coastal Islands

Nov 26, 2019
"Clammers on a Summer Evening," an acrylic on canvas by Jane Herbert.

Rockland — Come to the winter art opening at Maine Coastal Islands NWR Visitor Center, 9 Water St., on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and meet the artists: Jane Herbert of Waldoboro with seascapes of Muscongus Bay; Carla Skinder of St. George with wildlife photography from around the world; and Laurie Murray of Rockland with an exhibit on nature journaling.

Herbert is a lifelong painter using acrylics on a variety of surfaces for more than 50 years. Exhibited are realistic seascapes painted during and as a result of visits to islands in Muscongus Bay. She has included several pieces that symbolically reflect both sadness and hope for the plight of our natural world.

Skinder has traveled the world capturing the wonders of wildlife through the camera lens. This exhibit will highlight some of her favorite photos from around the world, and will be a revolving show.

Murray, a former university creative writing lecturer and writing center director and a self-taught naturalist, has been taking classes on nature journaling, keeping journals, and is excited to share with others. Her exhibit will illustrate the practice of nature journaling and field sketching. In January, she will be forming a nature journaling group at the visitor center.

This art will be on display through March 2020. For more information, call 594-0600, ext. 5.
