Windjammers wrangle way to fourth at Spartan Tournament

Allen wins 120-pound class, Camden Hills earns six top-five finishes

Sanford — There is no more prestigious high school wrestling tournament in Maine each winter than the historic, talent-laden Spartan event and, as usual, at the meet, Camden Hills mat athletes usually demonstrate their mettle against the best in New England, as the Windjammers did over the weekend with a first, three thirds, two fifths for individuals and a team fourth.

The Windjammers boarded a bus at the end of the week and trekked west across the state to compete with 24 other squads on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6 in the event hosted by Sanford.

The Windjammers returned home with a fourth-place finish, after amassing 112.5 points, behind six top-five finishes. The Camden Hills "B" team also registered four points to finish 19.

Timberlane of Plaistow, N.H. again finished first with 288 points.

The team scores were: Timberlane 288, Marshwood of South Berwick 168.5, Massabesic of Waterboro 117, Camden Hills of Rockport 112.5, Timberlane "B" 104.5, Mountain Valley of Rumford 104, York, 98, Sanford 95, Belfast 92, Scarborough 91.5, Portland 82, Bonny Eagle of Standish 76, Noble of North Berwick 62, Massabesic "B" 35, Biddeford 34.5, Noble "B" 12, Sacopee Valley of Hiram 9, Thornton Academy of Saco 8, Camden Hills "B" 4, Marshwood "B" 3 and York "B", Portland "B", Scarborough "B" and Mountain Valley "B" no score.

The Windjammers enjoyed six top-six finishes, including Eric Andrews (5th at 106 pounds), Devin Hutcheson (3rd at 113), Dawson Allen (1st at 120), Ian Henderson (5th at 132), Noah Lang (3rd at 145) and Alex Vokey (3rd at 170).

The individual Camden Hills results, with Windjammers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Eric Andrews beat Timothy Smith, Bel, 2-0; was pinned by Nick Roeger, Tim, at 2:12; pinned Nate Leclair, MtVal, at 1:40; lost to Vinney Deroche, MtVal, 10-7; and pinned Anthony Napolitano, Por, at 3:28. Andrews finished fifth.

113 pounds — Devin Hutcheson pinned Chris Rankin, BE, at 0:54; was pinned by Sean Moriarty, Mar, at 0:24; pinned Cody Hussey, Noble, at 0:59; and pinned Matt Myles, MtVal, at 2:38 in the consolation final. Hutcheson finished third.

Josh Saucier lost to Cody Hussey, Noble, 6-4; pinned Colby Downs, Bid, at 1:41; and was pinned by Chris Rankin, BE, at 3:52.

120 pounds — Dawson Allen pinned Patrick Hanley, Bel, at 0:17; pinned George Landry, Mass, at 1:52; beat Carson Goodwin, Mar, 10-8; and pinned Josh Mackaman, York, at 2:57 in the championship final. Allen finished first.

132 pounds — Ian Henderson pinned Ryan Peavey, Bel, at 1:39; lost to Nick Pallaria, Tim, 8-1; pinned Cole Cadwalder, Noble, at 1:21; beat Cooper Van Gieson, San, 7-5; lost by major decision to Chase Curry, Bel, 11-3; and pinned Nat Grader, York, at 3:19. Henderson finished fifth.

138 pounds — Nikita Perevalov was pinned by Alex Rachkoskie, Noble, at 5:04; and was pinned by Levi Lambert, Noble, at 2:10.

145 pounds — Noah Lang pinned Elijah Charbonnier, Bel, at 1:00; beat Noah Hernandez, Mass, 7-3; was pinned by Dylan Musgrave, Tim, at 5:24; beat Tyler Fitz, BE, 2-0; and beat David Spinney, Mar, 4-3, in the consolation final. Lang finished third.

152 pounds — Caleb Hendricks was pinned by Matt Beerworth, Noble, at 0:34; and lost by major decision to Micah Fitzgerald, Mass, 8-0.

170 pounds — Alex Vokey pinned Caden Densler, York, at 0:30; won by technical fall against Aushee Edmond, Bid, 17-1; lost to Brandon Berube, Tim, 3-0; pinned Brendon Young, Tim, at 0:58; and pinned Kyle Smith, Mass, at 0:21, in the consolation final. Vokey finished third.

182 pounds — Kenneth Dare was pinned by Billy Savage, Tim, at 4:33; and was pinned by Malcolm Gartland, Por, at 2:30.
