Windjammers seventh in state Class A championships

Anderson ties for seventh, Fisher 11th among 55 golfers

Vassalboro — Fresh off winning the league title four days earlier, the Camden Hills golf team hoped to make noise in the state Class A championships on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Natanis Golf Club and the Windjammers did that, to some degree, with a seventh-place finish among 11 of the best squads in Maine.

The Windjammers finished with a four-golfer, 18-hole score of 325 — or 37-over par.

The course par is 72.

Scarborough finished first at 305 — or plus-17.

The state Class A team scores were: Scarborough 305, Cheverus of Portland 308, Thornton Academy of Saco 314, Falmouth 315, Mount Ararat of Topsham 322, Portland 322, Camden Hills 325, Messalonskee of Oakland 329, Gorham 333, Lewiston 341 and Edward Little of Auburn 371.

Individually for the Windjammers, Cole Anderson led the charge as he finished 3-over par 75 to tie for seventh.

Other Camden Hills individual scores were: Braden Fisher, 78, tied for 11th; Conor O'Dwyer, 85, tied for 33rd; Sam Conlan, 87, tied for 38th; and Jonathan Mahoney, 93, 49th.

There were 55 golfers in Class A.

There was a three-way tie for medalist between Cheverus' Conner MacDonald, Scarborough's Anthony Burnham and Mount Ararat's Caleb Manuel, all whom finished at even-par 72.

The state Class B team scores were: Cape Elizabeth 319, Nokomis of Newport 343, Waterville 346, Erskine Academy of South China 351, Gardiner 360, Freeport 372, Yarmouth 381, Mount Desert Island 390, Old Town 402 and Spruce Mountain of Jay 431.

In Class B, Erskine Academy's Conner Paine finished as medalist at 2-over par 74 among 50 golfers.

The state Class C team scores were: Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 326, Houlton 340, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 365, St. Dominic of Auburn 365, Dirigo of Dixfield 369, North Yarmouth Academy 383, Forest Hills of Jackman 406, Monmouth Academy 407, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill 432 and Jonesport-Beals 432.

In Class C, Mattanawcook Academy's Logan Thompson finished at 2-under par 70 to finish first among 50 golfers.

Camden Hills finished 12-0 during regular-season matches, as the Windjammers played a Class B schedule, then they won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Rockland Golf Club.

The season essentially ended for the Windjammers on Saturday; however, two golfers, Anderson and Conlan, will participate in the state Class A individual championships on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. at Natanis.

Those two Windjammers qualified for the individual states in an earlier tournament.
