Waterville — The Camden Hills girls continued to cruise and Windjammer boys build and improve during a Friday, Sept. 7 high school cross-country meet hosted by Waterville.

Windjammer Augusta Stockman again led the talented, deep girls squad, which finished as unbeaten league, regional and state champions last fall and, if possible, appear even better this season.

At the Quarry Road Recreational Facility trails, Stockman won her third straight race to start the season (including a two-mile preseason event) as she bested 75 finishers at 20:59 in the girls event.

In the boys race, Hampden Academy's Wyatt Lord finished first in 17.17, while Camden Hills' Hayden Thibeault was 10th at 19.13, among 110 finishers.

The boys team scores were: Hampden Academy 21, Bangor 46, Brewer 88, Oxford Hills of South Paris 136, Messalonskee of Oakland 144, Camden Hills 149, Maranacook of Readfield 161 and Skowhegan and Waterville no score.

The girls team scores were: Camden Hills 30, Maranacook 57, Messalonskee 103, Oxford Hills 114, Bangor 126, Hampden Academy 127, Waterville 149, Brewer and Skowhegan no score.

"It is a difficult, hilly, absolutely beautiful 5K course," said veteran Windjammer coach Helen Bonzi of Quarry Road. "Today the weather helped everyone out a bit and was drier, slightly cooler at about 78 degrees, with a slight breeze.

"The Camden [Hills] girls looked very strong, winning the meet. The boys are in another building year and are looking stronger than the last two years. It’s been a slow start for both teams because of the late start to the school year. Several of the runners have been on vacations with their families and are still not yet competing in meets."

The coach said the Windjammers should be at full strength in the next meet, a homecoming event hosted by Medomak Valley High School on Friday, Sept. 14 in Waldoboro.

The individual Windjammer girls results were — 1, Stockman, 20.59; 5, Elsie Hildreth, 22.08; 8, Miranda Dunton, 22.40; 9, Phoebe Root, 22.59; 11, Rose O'Brien, 23.36; 15, Lauren Rothwell, 24.29; 24, Kaitlyn Kessel, 25.38; 34, Bella Gallace, 26.42; 44, Margaret Richmond, 27.36; 50, Allison Morse, 28.17; and 68, Katherine Upham, 34.26.

The individual Windjammer boys results were — 10, Thibeault, 19.13; 28, Ian Orsmond, 20.37; 31, Elias Porter, 20.44; 71, Sam Poutasse, 24.09; 81, Colin Stewart, 24.35; 85, Ben Kern, 24.58; 86, Jonathan McDevitt, 25.05; 95, Max Gallagher, 26.53; 105, Julian Mayhorn, 29.44; and 109, Thomas Eagar, 32.58.
