Rockport — The 16th annual Allen Insurance and Financial High School Tennis Challenge always is a precursor to the start of the regular season — but typically, not to a late-spring snowstorm.

However, this year's event, on Friday, April 6, proved both as the Camden Hills boys hosted the best of the best from last year — Falmouth and Yarmouth — to an afternoon of high-quality indoor tennis, while the snow flew outside the Midcoast Recreation Center.

The Windjammers — the defending state Class B champions — played Yarmouth in the 4 p.m. match, while the Clippers and Yachtsmen squared off before the hosts and Yachtsmen finished the event in the nightcap.

The Clippers lost to the Windjammers in the state Class B final last season, while the Yachtsmen swung to the state Class A crown.

In Friday's event, Falmouth beat Camden Hills 4-1, Falmouth bested Yarmouth 4-1 and Camden Hills downed Falmouth 4-1.

The preseason event originated in 2002 when former Camden Hills coach Chris Walker-Spencer and MRC's John Lippman, a former Windjammer tennis coach, and Steve Crane, the former CEO of the Allen Agency, wanted a way to bring a strong boys tennis presence to the Midcoast prior to the regular season.

Camden Hills, which will transition to Class A this year, will open its regular season on Thursday, April 12 at Mount Blue of Farmington.

The following is a breakdown of the Windjammers' matches against the Yachtsmen and Clippers:
