Windjammer Festival

By Steven J. Pixley, Camden Harbormaster | Aug 30, 2011

It’s hard to believe that the summer of 2011 is drawing to an end. But when I put the hammer and portable drill to the now famous schooner talent stage in the Camden Harbor park, I know the crisp blue skies of September are soon to follow.

The entire Windjammer Festival Committee met for a practice run-through and we are excited that the maritime heritage fair at the public landing is looking more exciting than ever. There are many exhibitors to show the folks all the sailing lore, knot tying and other salty stuff; in fact, this is the first year we have all slots taken up.

The old windjammers will lumber into Camden Harbor around 12-ish on Friday and keep rafting up until 6 p.m. My other favorite events are the fireworks at 9 p.m.; lobster crate races on Saturday at 2 p.m.; and the Pirate invasion on Sunday at 1 p.m., with all that pistol and cannon fire!

The Camden Windjammer Committee would be happy if anyone who has time to fill a volunteer slot for any of the weekend events, from Friday, Sept. 2 through Sunday, Sept. 4, could call me, Steve, 691-4314. I will then hand you over to Emily or Meg who will figure in your availability and sign you up.

Be forewarned: If you join this team you will most likely make friends with other folks and be asked to have fun and help next year!

Thank you and enjoy the rest of our summer.
