Caroline Garrett Hardy will lead a one-day Painting with Paper workshop at The Art Loft in Rockland.

Rockland — The downtown Art Loft, 385 Main St., Suite 9, in the Thorndike building, offers a variety of options for both new-to-it and experienced painters this month.

On Friday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., the first of two Paint Nights will result in a “Modern Bouquet.” Led by Kim Nicol, participants will mix socializing with step-by-step painting that results in a canvas to take home, even by hose who have never painted before. Snacks will be served; feel free to BYOB, wine or beer is fine. Cost is $35.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Caroline Garrett Hardy of Williamsburg, Va., leads a Painting with Paper day of color and composition. Participants should bring a color print-out of a pet, a favorite scene, a boat, flowers, a still life — one’s own photo or from a magazine or online; and papers, anything from wrapping paper to old maps. There will be a one-hour lunch break. Cost is $65, plus a $10 materials fee collected at the door.

Thursday, Aug. 17, visitors and Maine residents alike are invited to Paint the Sea with instructor Frieda Hanlon from 6 to 8 p.m. In this workshop, participants will take easy-to-work-with everyday materials to create dramatic, but simple-to-produce renditions of the sea. Using paper as a background, paints will be applied with brush, palette knives, brayers (printing rollers), credit cards and anything else one can think of to end up with a frame-worthy piece of art. Cost is $35.

Upcoming is another Paint Night Friday, Aug. 18; professional artist/instructor Angela Anderson of Port Clyde will teach her process with one of her original puffin images. Cost is $35. For more information and to register for any of these options, visit artloftrockland.org or call 200-7915.
