When taxman comes, more than 55 decide to run — or walk

Thomaston — When the taxman cometh one has two clear options — pay up or run.

On Saturday morning, April 13 — two days before tax day — 55 hardy souls chose to run, or walk, in the rain in an attempt to stay one or more steps ahead of the dreaded taxman.

Despite gloomy, rainy conditions, and the fact a fast man chased them, more than 50 people did their best to cross the 3.1-mile course as quickly as possible to avoid further taxation.

It was all in good fun during the "Tax Day" 5-kilometer race/walk as Darren Winchenbach, a longtime local runner, played the role of the taxman and had the fun of trying to chase down the other participants — who were given a whopping four-minute and 15-second head start (the date of 4/15 is, of course, tax day).

Nonetheless, when this taxman came knocking, there again was no where to hide for most of the participants.

Watch video and see more photos below.

Winchenbach, dressed in a shirt and tie, of course (only thing missing was his briefcase), ended up catching and passing many and, ultimately, when his time was adjusted, had only two runners, winner Keith Drago, 31, of Rockport, who crossed the course in 18:32.08, and runner-up Jack Sullivan, 24, of Rockland, who finished in 19:08.73, record faster times.

Winchenbach, a 37-year-old longtime Waldoboro resident who now calls Saco home, finished with an adjusted time of 20:38.37.

Jenna Vanryn, 12, of North Granby, Conn., was the first female to finish, as she was seventh in 24:01.87.

"We had a great turnout on a rainy Saturday," said Lucas McNelly, race director. "Darren Winchenbach was the mystery 'tax man' and caught all but 10 of the runners after their 4:15 head start, despite [him] running in a shirt and tie. The runners who beat him all received Easter-themed prizes."

The event was presented by Heal Accounting and was the second in the One Community Many Voices series for 2019.

Special "finisher medals" for dogs, courtesy of Loyal Biscuit., were given out for canines that finished the race with their humans.

The event was hosted by One Community Many Voices, a non-profit group, and is part of that group's Midcoast Race Series.

One Community Many Voices is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization in Rockland. It uses a model called "The Art of Good Fellowship — Paying it Forward One Neighbor at a Time."
