Rockland — Rockland political newcomer Lisa Westkaemper and incumbent Councilor Valli Geiger were elected to the city council Tuesday night.

Westkaemper topped the voting with 1,018 votes while Geiger received 768. Gregory Mason came in a close third with 755 votes.

Turnout totaled 1,637 votes.

Westkaemper has had a career as an arts administrator; she has been employed as the executive director of an arts umbrella organization in Austin, Texas, where she served as an arts advocate and representative of the theater community. As production manager at the University of Texas at Austin, she oversaw all aspects of production at a multi-theater performing arts complex with a multi-million-dollar budget. She was also the co-artistic director for a theater and community education center in north Texas. In addition, Westkaemper was a member of the dance and theater faculty at the University of North Texas for many years.

She is on the board of the Millay House.

She served a two-year term on the city council of Justin, a city of about 3,200 residents in northern Texas, in 2012-2013.

Westkaemper and her husband purchased their Broadway residence in Rockland in 2013 from Geiger and her husband.

Geiger is completing her first three-year term on the City Council. The Broadway resident is a nurse. During her first term on the council, she called for steps to deal with the affordable housing shortage in the community.

Geiger served as chairman of the Rockland Comprehensive Planning Commission before being elected to the council.

A 20-year resident of Rockland, Geiger has called for amending the city's zoning laws to permit denser residential development in town and has worked to get tax-acquired properties back into use as housing.

Geiger is the most veteran member of the council, with three years of service.

Councilors will hold a re-organizational meeting on Nov. 20 to elect a new mayor. Current Mayor Will Clayton did not seek re-election.

The mayor in Rockland presides over meetings, attends ceremonial events, and nominates members to city boards and commissions.

Regional School Unit 13 board member Carol Bachofner was re-elected unopposed to the school board.

Will you be there Richard? Never has happened, never will. You need to get your head out of the sand. Sorry but all your postings no action does not work well.

Looking forward to the council moving ahead to face some serious situations cooperatively.   Hope to hear some positive solutions coming during the public comment time.
