Rockport — Town Manager Rick Bates announced May 14 that Andrew Weber has been hired by the town as the new manager of the Rockport Opera House. Weber currently serves as an instructor at Rockland's Midcoast Music Academy where he specializes in percussion.

Bates said that he received 15 applications for the position, and conducted follow-up interviews of the candidates along with outgoing Opera House manager Terri Lea Smith. Smith had served as manager since late 2015, and will be leaving her post to pursue a career in photography and filmmaking full time.

A biography of Weber on the MMA website states that he was raised in Detroit, Mich. and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Weber is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, the Sabian Educators Network, and has instructed over 2,000 students during his career.

The duties of the position include handling rental agreements for the Opera House, providing lighting and sound for performing acts, as well as scheduling and overseeing utility and technology improvements throughout the building. Additionally, during her time at the venue, Smith said that she strove to promote the space through social media platforms.

"I want this to continue to be a place which has a friendly atmosphere and where people feel like they're at home." said Smith on April 30. "And I hope the new manager will be someone who is resourceful, proactive about marketing, and will let it be known that this is a wonderful place to see a great live show."

Originally known as the Rockport Town Hall, the structure was built by architect F.E. Gilkey in 1892.  Over the years the facility has gone through several permutations, including stints as a rollerskating rink, a bowling alley, the town library and a basketball court. Located at 6 Central St., the Rockport Opera House is also where annual town meetings have been held since 1925.
