Warren — The Warren Recreation Department youth cheering program continued to see strong success in a bundle of recent competitions.

The cheerleaders, who represent different ages groups, include the older, more experienced Warren Panthers, as well as the Warren Whiskers and Warren Cubs.

The fourth- through sixth-graders, the Warren Panthers, include Alex Gallagher, Katrina McIntosh, Caitlyn Robbins, Aaliyah Thompson, Arden Kondracki, Kylie Miller, Alexa Miller, Jalyn Drost, Grace McClean, Kaleigh Austin, Samantha Richardson, Braelyn Hood, Hope Mason, Eliana Gross, Alyssa Grindle, Melissa Fogg, Molly Simmons, Amanda Wheelis, Ashlyn Ward and Skylah Ward.

The coaches are Claire Power, Julie Schumann, Vikki Swan and Patricia Leach

Eighteen girls competed and "left their heart on the floor, two weekends in a row – first place each time," Power said.

On Feb. 25, the group competed at a competition at Lawrence High School in Fairfield. The Warren Panthers earned first for Shining Stars Division 1 with a score of 66, while second was Oak Hill Shining Stars with 47.9.

The Warren Cubs and Warren Whiskers placed third in the competition, Power said.

On March 1,  there was a cheer exhibition showcase and awards night at Warren Community School. "This was to show the local family and friends what our cheerleaders can do," Power said.

On March 5, the young athletes competed at the Maine State Cheerleading Championships, hosted by the Calais Recreation Department, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Warren Panthers finished first for Peewee Division 1 with 89, while second was Hancock Hornets with 61.5.

The Warren Cubs and Warren Whiskers "performed well with heads held high and respectable placements," said Power.

“Our Warren Panthers cheerleading squad has a ton of talent and we wanted it to shine so the rest of the state could see what they had to offer," Power said. "We always want to do better the next season so we decided to amp up the routine this season with stunts that were a bit more advanced, especially at the peewee (elementary school age) level and increase our difficulty in tumbling skills while also increasing the amount of girls that could do it. We were big into using the 'wow' factor so we could knock it out of the park. And I would say, this year, we definitely did it. So proud of all our cheerleaders and coaches. Our motto this year was … 'start unknown, finish unforgettable' … and that we did."

Congratulations!  What a feat.  A fine, demanding sport.  And congratulations to the Warren Recreation Department for offering such programs.
