WALDOBORO — Waldoboro Public Library's Artist of the Month for August and September is Waldoboro resident George Hayes.

After serving in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam War, Hayes obtained a degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He worked as a technical illustrator for many years and then started his own successful graphics business. Hayes retired from his active graphic years as a graphic designer for Lycian Stage Lighting Centre for Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf, NY.

Hayes met Shawn Dell Joyce, artist and director of the Wallkill River School of Art, in Montgomery, NY. He began his passion for fine arts and painting in plein air at the school. There he studied pastel painting with Joyce and drawing and painting with other artists such as Dennis Fanton, Gene Bove, Loman Ing and William Noonan. Hayes is an award-winning international artist and was represented by the Wallkill School of Art. He has also exhibited in many other venues throughout the New York region. His paintings hang in many private collections throughout the Unites States and Ireland. Hayes paints with the Medomak Plein Air Painters and has exhibited at the Medomak Arts and River Arts galleries.

"Growing up in rural Pennsylvania influenced my love of nature. I enjoy the experience of plein air painting and the commune with nature that it brings. Color is an exciting way for me to express and preserve my views of the local surroundings and I especially like the impressionistic style of painting, which I attempt to use when painting in oils or pastels. I am an eclectic painter — I enjoy exploring different techniques, mediums and ways of painting as can be seen in my varied paintings," Hayes said."I believe it's never too late to explore interests that call you. I enjoy nature and the wonders therein. I find great joy in painting and drawing and hope to continue to explore and grow with time."
