Rockland — It seemed fitting that the District 2 Little League 9-and 10-year-old double-elimination baseball tournament would conclude with Waldo County and Oceanside standing at the end.

After all, those opponents played what was the game of the tournament days prior, as Waldo County held on for an 8-7, seven-inning victory on Sunday, July 8.

However, the championship game at E. Allen Gordon Field on Saturday, July 14 did not have the same dramatic, competitive feel as the first contest between the teams.

Waldo County not only had its offensive game in gear, but its pitching also was working in a significant way as two hurlers combined on a no-hitter as Waldo County surged past Oceanside with a 6-0 victory to claim the coveted district championship.

The following is a recap of the final two games of the tournament:

Waldo County 6, Oceanside 0

At Rockland July 14, Waldo County clicked on all cylinders and motored to the District 2 championship with a shutout win over Oceanside.

After two scoreless frames, Waldo County surged to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and then tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth frames.

Knowlton went the first five innings on the hill for Waldo County, while Powers toed the rubber in the sixth. The duo combined to fire a no-hitter in the title tilt as they yielded two walks and struck out 15 batters in the impressive win.

Knowlton struck out the first seven batters he faced and 13-of-17 overall, while Powers fanned two of the final three batters in the sixth.

Hamilton and Geretz pitched for Oceanside, as the two allowed four hits, three walks and one hit batter, with eight strikeouts.

Leading the newly-crowned District 2 champions at the dish were Powers (single, 2 runs), Tripp (run), Thornley (single, run, 2 RBIs), Carson (single, run) and Bryant (single, run).

After neither team could push a run across in the first two innings, Waldo County got on the board in the third, which began as Bryant and Powers reached on singles, which put both in scoring position.

Bryant then scampered home on a wild pitch — as Tripp drew a walk to reach — which put runners at the corners and gave Waldo County a 1-0 lead.

After Tripp stole second, Thornley connected on a two-run single — and later came around to score on an error — to give Waldo County a 4-0 advantage.

Oceanside nearly plated a run in the third when Kay stole third base and the ball scooted into left field, but Carson threw a dart down the line to Knowlton, who applied the tag on Kay in front of the plate for the final out of the inning.

Waldo County added a run in the fifth when Powers reached on an error and later slid in on a close play at the plate, and another in the sixth when Carson singled and also scored on an error.

Oceanside 13, Medomak Valley 9

At Rockland July 11, Oceanside rallied to knot the score 7-7 in the fourth inning — and then got an inside-the-park home run by Pratt — as it pulled away from Medomak Valley and clinched a berth in the championship round.

Oceanside scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the fourth and three in the fifth, while Medomak Valley scored three in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Leading Oceanside at the plate were Hoose (2 runs), Pratt (home run, 3 runs, 3 RBIs), Geddis (single, 2 RBIs), Hamilton (single), Guptill (single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Geretz (run), Tripp (2 runs), Kay (2 runs) and Whytock (single, run, 2 RBIs).

For Medomak Valley, Thomas (single, 2 runs), Herring (single, 2 runs, RBI), Blake (3 singles, 2 runs), Tucker Brown (single), Simmons (3 singles, run), Thomas Brown (double), Benedix (run) and Wilshire (run) paced the offense.

Herring and Thomas pitched for Medomak Valley, as the two allowed 10 hits and two walks, with 10 strikeouts. Hoose and Geddis pitched for Oceanside, as the teammates allowed five hits and eight walks, with 10 strikeouts.

Medomak Valley held a 7-3 lead in the early going before Oceanside had its first seven batters reach and score in the fourth, which culiminated with a three-run, inside-the-park home run by Pratt, to make the score 10-7.

Medomak Valley cut its deficit to 10-9 after Blake rapped an RBI-single and a second run came in moments later, but Oceanside responded with a sacrifice fly and a two-run single by Geddis to pull away.
