Vinalhaven — Penobscot Bay’s best and longest standing high school basketball rivals squared off on the hardwood to wrap their regular seasons on Wednesday, Feb. 6 in a makeup game as the Vinalhaven and North Haven girls tipped off as the Hawks’ postseason hopes hung in the balance.

The Hawks — who recently ended a 15-game losing streak with a win over Forest Hills of Jackman — needed a victory over the Vikings to have a chance to sneak into the Class D South playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Vikings — coming off a state Class D title and regional championship in back-to-back seasons — hoped to finish the campaign on an upward note as they prepare to return to the Augusta Civic Center.

The teams scrapped throughout, but in the end, the Vikings came away with a 40-31 victory, which essentially knocked the Hawks out of the playoffs.

Vinalhaven held a slim lead throughout most of the affair as the Vikings were up 12-10 after the first quarter, 21-19 at halftime and 33-30 after three quarters.

Hope Cluff led Vinalhaven with a 21-point performance, while Shyanne Warren added 12; Marina Davis, eight; Hannah Newton, six; and Myra Mills and Corey Lazaro, two.

Layla Sparhawk scored 17 points for North Haven, while Isabelle Haskell and Mercedes Sparhawk added 10 and Kaylee Ames three.

The Vikings were 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the foul line, while the Hawks were 5-of-14 (36 percent).

Vinalhaven also nipped North Haven 32-31 in a game earlier this season.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South, Vinalhaven (3-15, 11.9907 points) is seventh, while North Haven (1-15, 8.2639 points) is ninth. Rangeley (17-1, 131-0957 points) is first in the nine-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
