Vinalhaven house heavily damaged in fire

By Stephen Betts | Jun 19, 2020

Vinalhaven — Two people were able to escape out a window when a fire heavily damaged a house on Vinalhaven.

The two people were not injured, as they were able to get out safely from a first-floor window of the home at 15 Macks Pond Road, Vinalhaven Fire Chief Marc Candage said.

The fire was reported at 12:28 a.m. Thursday, June 18. The fire was discovered when one of the occupants smelled smoke.

The fire chief said when crews arrived, there was heavy fire from the back of the building. The fire was knocked down quickly but crews remained on the scene for three hours.

The house can be repaired, he said, but is not currently in a condition to be lived in. The two people have found a place to stay, he said.

The cause of the fire is believed to be improper disposal of a cigarette outside the building.
