Augusta — The ripple effect of one Midcoast island team's playoff loss has affected the time of another as the Maine Principals’ Association has made adjustments to the Class D South high school boys and girls basketball quarterfinal schedule for the coming days at the Augusta Civic Center.

The No. 2 Vinalhaven girls (14-4) originally were scheduled to face No. 7 Highview Christian of Charleston (5-13) on Monday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m., but that game now will be played on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

The schedule change took place due to the No. 9 Pine Tree Academy boys knocking off No. 8 Islesboro 60-54 in a Class D South prelim playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Islesboro.

Pine Tree Academy of Freeport is a Seventh-day Adventist school and observes its day of prayer on Saturday and, thus, does not participate in athletic events on that day, which caused the scheduling conflict and necessitated the change.

Now, the quarterfinal between the Breakers and top-seeded Greenville will take the slot formerly occupied by the Vikings and Knights on Monday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m.

As a result, the Vinalhaven teams will play quarterfinal playoff games on the same day as the No. 6 Viking boys (7-11) will face No. 3 Valley of Bingham (11-7) on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:30 a.m.
