Vinalhaven Benefit Challenge turns up heat for duathletes

Event includes nine-mile bike ride, three-mile run

Vinalhaven — Scorching temperatures and oppressive humidity did not keep runners and bicyclists from the 17th annual Vinalhaven Benefit Challenge on Saturday, July 21.

Fifty-three teams and solo participants turned out for the event, which consisted of a nine-mile bicycle ride and nearly three-mile run route.

Participants could take on both as a duathlon, cycle only, or run, or walk, the course.

The event has been held annually to raise money for the Vinalhaven Ambulance and Fire Services.

Peter Quayle took the top honors for the duathlon, as he finished first with an overall time of 47:09.

The first duathlon team of Sarah Barrett and Mark McCarthy finished in 56:04.

Hillary Bunker was the first cycle-only finisher. Bunker’s time was 39:43.
