Vinalhaven advances, MVHS, Oceanside, Camden Hills end seasons

It was not a happy or satisfying foray into the high school regional basketball tournament for four of five Midcoast teams who took the court at some point Tuesday, Feb. 11 for prelim playoff encounters.

In fact, all five area squads played at home and the road teams won four of those battles.

Only the Vinalhaven girls emerged victorious, as the Medomak Valley boys and Oceanside, Camden Hills and Medomak Valley girls fell short in their bids to reach the regional tournament at the new Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

In Eastern Class B boys prelim playoff action in Waldoboro, No. 10 Ellsworth stunned No. 7 Medomak Valley with a late 3-point shot to win 47-44. The Panthers were the defending regional champions.

In Eastern Class B girls prelim playoff action, all three area teams hosted games and lost to lower-seeded opponents.

In Rockland, No. 6 Oceanside (10-9) lost to No. 11 Ellsworth (9-10) 50-47, while in Rockport, No. 9 Gardiner (12-7) bested No. 8 Camden Hills (11-8) 61-52 and, in Waldoboro, in the second game of a playoff doubleheader, No. 10 John Bapst of Bangor (10-9) edged No. 7 Medomak Valley (10-9) 33-32.

The lone bright spot, locally at least, came several miles out in Penobscot Bay in Western Class D girls prelim playoff action as No. 8 Vinalhaven (12-7) bested No. 9 North Yarmouth Academy (6-13) 51-47 in court action on the island.

Thus, Vikings move on to the tournament at the Augusta Civic Center, while the Panthers, Windjammers and Mariners hang up their sneakers after solid campaigns.

Stories and photos from each of Tuesday's high school prelim basketball playoff games will appear later.
