Port Clyde — Verona B. Curtis, 87, died peacefully Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at Woodlands Memory Care of Rockland, following a long illness.

"Bone," as she was known by her family and many friends, was a name one of her grandchildren gave her because they couldn’t pronounce "Verona." She was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Portland and was the daughter of Clayton and Verona Watt Miller.

For many years, Verona was employed with 40 Fathoms, and later National Sea Products, working until that plant closed in 1990. It was then that Verona earned her GED, as well as completing a C.N.A. course. From that time forward, she was employed with Camden Health Care until her retirement.

An avid gardener, she kept beautiful flower and vegetable gardens around her home. She also loved caring for the birds.

Predeceased by her husband, Harry Curtis, in 1974; her longtime companion, Alfred "Jr." Morris, in 1997; an infant son, Harry; her son Scottie in 2003; a grandson Sheldon in 2017; two brothers, Winslow and Donald Miller; and a son-in-law Oliver "Jim" Dennison, Verona is survived by her son Wayne Curtis and his wife, Carol, of Port Clyde; her daughters, Gloria Dennison of South Thomaston, Rosanne Ausplund and her husband, Mark, of Tenants Harbor; a sister, Thelma Berry, of Hyannis, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Carlene Wiley, of Waldoboro; six grandchildren, Craig, Christopher, Amy, Neala, Magan, Michael; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Woodlands for their friendship and excellent care during Verona’s stay.

Mrs. Curtis’ family has chosen to remember her life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860; or Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
