Using plants for peaceful sleep

Jul 17, 2017
Denise DeSpirito will lead a talk on using herbs for a peaceful night's sleep Tuesday, July 25 at Merryspring.

Camden — Gardener and herbalist Denise DeSpirito will lead a presentation on using plants for peaceful sleep Tuesday, July 25, at noon at Merryspring Nature Center.

Getting good sleep is vital to keeping us energized during the day and supporting our overall health yet it is elusive for so many people.

There are many plants that can support peaceful sleep by taking them before bed or throughout the day in addition to building a night time ritual that supports the body to slow down and rest deeply. In this talk Denise will visit some of these plants in Merryspring's garden, see how they grow and learn about some basic preparations of how to use them.

Focus will also be placed on plants for dreaming and plants that can help stimulate in the morning as an alternate to coffee.

DeSpirito is the gardens manager at Merryspring. Prior to gardening for Merryspring, DenSpirito has grown herbs and flowers at Avena Botanicals, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in New York, and Farmacy Herbs in Rhode Island.

This is an outdoor program, so guests should dress appropriately for weather and wear sturdy shoes. A selection of recommended gardening books, tools, and plants will be for sale after the presentation.

This lecture is part of the Summer Talk series at Merryspring, sponsored by The First National Bank. Admission to Tuesday talks is $5, with free admission for members of Merryspring.

Merryspring is your community nature center offering walking trails, cultivated gardens, wildlife, and ecology and horticulture educational programs all year round. The park is located at the end of Conway Road, just off of Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza.
