Rockport — The first call of the new year for the Rockport Fire Department was a vehicle fire on Mill Street at 2:14 a.m. Jan. 2, according to the department's Facebook page.

The firefighters responded in 18-degree weather.

Even with rapid response from 20 firefighters, there wasn’t much to save when they arrived, according to the post.

Fire Chief Jason Peasley said no one was with the vehicle when firefighters arrived, and the driver had apparently fled the scene. Police are investigating the incident.

The vehicle was an older model Chevy pickup truck. The chief said, beause of the vehicle's age, the cause of the fire could be a number of things.
