Updated lessons and carols  planned for Dec. 17

Dec 04, 2017

Rockland — St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 11 White St., invites the public to participate in a festive Lessons and Carols service Sunday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 p.m.

The service first became popular in Britain after World War I, as the nation sought to heal and come together. BBC Radio soon picked it up and has broadcast it annually from King's College, Cambridge, making this service one of the most popular of the holiday season in Britain. The program has spread to the U.S. and Canada and around the world.

St. Peter's has updated the service for our day and time. Christmas carols and hymns are sung between brief Bible readings that tell the story of Christianity and Jesus’ birth. The program unfolds as a dramatic conversation between the reader, the choir and people in the pews, who lend their voices on the well-known carols.

The service is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to assist St. Peter's outreach to those in need. For more information, contact the church at 594-8191.
