Up, Down, Out

Luke 24:36-53; Acts 1:3-11

Pastor Adam Kohlstrom

24:33-37. At least three of those present already had seen Jesus risen and everyone else had believed them, yet how did everyone react when Jesus suddenly appeared? Why do you think they reacted in this way?

24:38-43. When have you, like the disciples, wanted to believe something but at the same time struggled to believe it? How did Jesus prove His physical resurrection (Acts 1:3)? Why do you think the disciples emphasized the physicality and tangibility of the resurrection (cf. John 19:35; Acts 5:30-32; 10:39-41; 1John 1:1-4; 2Peter 1:16)?

24:44-47. “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you…” Together review some of those words (Luke 9:21-22; 18:31-34; 22:37; 24:6-7; 24:26-27). Christ’s fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy was also a theme of the early church’s message. Consider together some examples:

·       Acts 2:25-36 (David spoke of Christ in Psalm 16:8-11; 110:1).

·       Acts 3:18-26 (prophet like Moses - Deuteronomy 18:15-19; promises to Abraham – Genesis 12:3, Galatians 3:8)

·       Acts 4:25 (Psalm 2:1-2)

·       Acts 13:26-41. (Psalm 2:7; 16:11; Isaiah 55:3)

·       1 Peter 1:10-12

24:49 (Acts 1:4-5,8). What is the connection between Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Spirit (cf. John 16:7; Acts 5:30-32)?

24:48-53; Acts 1:1-11. Luke wrote both the gospel that bears his name and the book of Acts. How does the beginning of Acts flesh out what happened leading up to and including Jesus’ ascension?

24:48-49 and Acts 1:8 say, “you [will be] clothed with power” and by that power you will be “my witnesses” - an important theme throughout Acts (2:32; 3:15; 5:32; 10:39; 13:31; 22:15). What would it look like for you to better rely on the Spirit’s power? How can we better bear witnesses to Jesus today?
