Rockland — Two longtime Knox County department heads are nearing retirement.

The retirements of Linwood Lothrop, who has been director of the Knox County Regional Communications Center for 18 years; and Knox County Regional Airport Manager Jeffrey Northgraves were announced Monday, Sept. 30, during a special meeting of the Knox County Commission.

Commissioners thanked Lothrop for his service to the county.

"Thank you for the opportunity to serve the county," Lothrop said during the meeting. He will be retiring Thursday, Oct. 3.

Lothrop, a Rockland resident, has been in public safety since February 1976, when he was hired by Rockland as a public safety dispatcher. He served as a dispatcher and later head of that department until Rockland merged its communications center with Knox County.

Northgraves,a South Thomaston resident, has served as airport manager for Knox County since June 2004, when he was appointed interim director to succeed Greg Grotton. Northgraves was appointed to the permanent position in February 2005.

Northgraves had served as a colonel in the Air Force before returning to the Midcoast and taking the county position. He also served as a selectman in South Thomaston, a position his late father, Jack Northgraves, had also held.

Northgraves will retire in January 2020. He said he plans to operate a drone business with his son upon his retirement.

Stephen, I think your employment dates are off for Jeff by 10 years.

I will never forget career day back in my early school years when I wanted to be a dispatcher and I had an opportunity to learn what it was all about by Linwood. H e was always a great dispatcher and will always be a great friend. Congratulations on your retirement. Congratulations to Mr Northgraves  as well.
