Waterville — Blustery conditions, early-season rust and lack of depth were issues in the season-opening doubleheader for the Vinalhaven-North Haven softball team on Tuesday, April 16 at Colby College, where the Vikings played a pair of five-inning contests with Temple Academy.

The Bereans came away with a 9-3 victory in game one and doubled up the islanders 8-4 in game two in diamond battles on the artificial turf.

Despite the losses, veteran Vinalhaven-North Haven coach Doug Littlefield was upbeat after the games. One day prior, the Vikings had only eight players before a late roster addition gave them the nine players needed to put a complete team on the diamond.

“I saw a lot from these girls,” he said. “They played really well. Some of these girls have never even touched a softball before [and] some of them still don’t know a lot about the game. But they’re figuring it out and hopefully through the season they’ll get better game by game. I”m really impressed with how they played.”

Littlefield said two of his players are completely new to the game, while four others have just one year of varsity experience under their belts. Vinalhaven-North Haven lost a bundle of key, experienced players to graduation.

Both teams had a bevy of errors on the day, some of which can be chalked up to inexperience and some to the windy conditions that reared its ugly head, particularly in game two. The artificial turf also is fast and bouncy, something the student-athletes mostly are not accustomed to.

Marina Davis’ two-run, inside-the-park home run in the third inning of game two — which was belted to the right-center field gap — was the highlight on the day for Vinalhaven-North Haven.

The Vikings have only 10 games on their schedule. The team had 12 games, but Rangeley pulled out late in the season after, due to low numbers, it was unable to field baseball or softball teams.

The following is a recap of the softball contests:

Temple Academy 8, Vinalhaven-North Haven 4 (5 inns.)

At Colby College April 16, a Marina Davis home run was not enough for the Vikings as the Bereans made it a clean sweep on the afternoon. Temple Academy scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second and four in the fourth, while Vinalhaven-North Haven scored one in the first and three in the third.

Davis’ two-run, inside-the-park homer paced the Vikings, while Ingrid Stockman (3 singles), Maddie Miller (run), Shyanne Warren (run) and Jazmyn Robishaw (single) also chipped in on offense.

For Temple Academy, Chloe Riportella (2 runs), Deleyni Carr (2 runs), Faith Rossignol (single, 2 runs), Amber Labbe (2 singles), Suzanne Lours (2 singles) and Elena Martin (single, 2 runs) paced the offense.

Davis pitched for Vinalhaven-North Haven, as she allowed six hits and struck out four. Carr pitched for Temple Academy, as she allowed five hits, with four strikeouts.

Temple Academy 9, Vinalhaven-North Haven 3 (5 inns.)

At Colby College April 16, the Bereans tripled up in the islanders in the first of two five-inning contests on the day. Temple Academy scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and two in the fourth, while Vinalhaven-North Haven plated two in the third and one in the fourth.

Leading the Bereans at the plate were Lours (2 singles, run), Shivon Larsen (run), Carr (single, 3 runs), Rossignol (2 runs), Juliette Quodbach (2 singles, run), Labbe (3 singles, run) and Martin (single).
