Trump Creates ‘Denaturalization’ Task Force to Pursue Deportation Against Thousands of U.S. Citizens

Just when it seems the Trump administration could not get any worse on immigration, news of a new policy breaks and the picture becomes darker. The Trump administration is launching a denaturalization force to strip citizenship from those who have gone through the rigorous process and been granted it.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is creating the task force. The purpose of the task force is to look into what the government claims are bad naturalization cases. The force will hire dozens of lawyers and immigration officers to find cases of citizens who the government claim’s should not have been naturalized. They will then take their citizenship and deport them.

The last time the United States tried to strip naturalized citizens of their citizenship was during the Red Scare, the McCarthy era. Then, the government went after those who they claimed were Communists. They stripped them of their citizenship and then deported them. Of course, the McCarthy era was one of the darker moments in American history, but so was Japanese internment and that has not stopped the Trump administration from creating internment camps for immigrants.

The director of the USCIS L. Francis Cissna said of the task force, “We finally have a process in place to get to the bottom of all these bad cases and start denaturalizing people who should not have been naturalized in the first place.”

While the administration currently claims the task force will be ferreting out only cases of people who “lied” to get citizenship, there is absolutely no reason to believe it will remain contained to those accused of fraud.

As described in Slate, this effort to strip people of their earned citizenship is another attempt by Republicans, led by Trump, to halt the browning of America and maintain white control of the country. They have re-districted and suppressed votes in order to better their chances of winning elections, and now they are attempting to throw out people who have earned the right to participate in American democracy.
