Rockport — While it did earn a home playoff match, the No. 7 Camden Hills boys lacrosse team knew it had a tough draw in the opponent who came to Don Palmer Field on Wednesday afternoon, June 9 in No. 10 Greely of Cumberland.

The Rangers, a high-profile sticks program, have been to the last two state finals, losing two Brunswick in 2018 and Yarmouth in 2019.

On Wednesday, Greely scored two goals in the first minute and, despite a late second-half Camden Hills comeback, never trailed and emerged from their first road match in Rockport with a 10-8 Class B high school lax playoff victory.

With the win, Greely (6-7) advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 2 Brunswick (11-1).

Camden Hills' strong campaign wrapped at 10-3.

Greely led 4-2 after the first quarter and 7-3 at halftime before Camden Hills went on the offensive in the third quarter and knotted the score 7-7 heading into the final stanza.

The Windjammer offense was led by Levi Guay (3 goals, assist, 2 ground balls), Jackson Fitch (3 goals, 3 ground balls), Charlie Griebel (2 assists, 3 ground balls), Willy Doehla (goal) Elias Libby (5 ground balls), Rory Carlson (4 ground balls), Nolan Delehey (2 ground balls) and Jakob Johnson (goal, 6 ground balls).

Delehey also won 7-of-14 faceoffs for the hosts.

For the Rangers, David Kenney (2 goals, 3 assists), Matthew Kennedy (4 goals, 2 assists), Lukas Cook (goal, assist), Thomas Bennett (assist), Elias Leggat-Barr (goal) and Chase Cornwall (2 goals) keyed the offense.

Camden Powell made 13 saves on 23 shots in goal for Camden Hills, while Spencer Osgood turned away over 17 shots in net for Greely.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, the Windjammers fought back with two goals from Fitch and one from Guay and Johnson to tie the score, but the Rangers broke the tie with seven minutes left on a one-man advantage with a goal from Kenney.

Kenney and Cornwall added two late goals as the Rangers pulled away.

Camden Hills coach Harrison Rogers said, despite the losses, his team’s last two games of the season against Greely and a double-overtime, regular-season defeated to Waynflete of Portland “were the best lacrosse games I have ever been part of in my five years coaching in Maine.”

“So proud of everyone on the team this season,” he said. “Winning all our games [10 wins] in northern Maine besides a tough early season loss to a very good Messalonskee [of Oakland] team. Then the last two games Camden Hills lacrosse was right there with two of the best programs in southern Maine in Greely and Waynflete. Playing these two teams to a tight, two-goal and one-goal, double-overtime loss is something that doesn’t happen that often in lacrosse for northern Maine teams.”

Guay, one of nine seniors, finished with 91 points and 50 assists, both school records, while Doehla finished with 32 goals and 16 assists; Johnson, 24 goals and eight assists; Griebel, 20 goals and 18 assists; and Fitch, 31 goals and 14 assists.
