Tough break for Panther cheerleaders

Waldoboro — All seemed to be going well for championship-driven Medomak Valley High School the week leading to the state Class B cheering competition until Molly Taylor, one of the Panthers' three seniors, broke her leg.

The injury caused a major ripple effect through the squad, as emotions swirled, and the team's original routine — which had won it league and regional crowns in the previous weeks — had to be altered.

That also meant student-athletes who had diligently and tirelessly worked for months leading up to the ultimate competition would not be able to participate on the most important stage — and under the sought-after state championship spotlight.

Taylor, head coach Heather Simmons, as well as Panthers Cassi Smeltzer and Cheyanne Greene, describe the whirlwind of the week leading to the states, as well the changes and sacrifices needed to be made, as Medomak Valley looked to win its first state crown.
