Rockland — Playoff ramifications abounded during the regular-season finale between the Oceanside and Medomak Valley boys high school basketball teams on Thursday night, Feb. 7, as the Mariners and Panthers — who sported identical 12-5 records — needed a victory for various reasons.

The Panthers needed a win merely for playoff survival as a loss — along with the outcomes of other key Thursday night contests — might have knocked them out of the Class A North playoff chase. Ultimately it did not.

On the other hand, the Mariners — in the No. 6 spot in Class B North heading into the game — needed a win to ascend the ladder and out of playing a potential prelim playoff game and earning an automatic berth to the tournament.

The game was tight throughout with a brief 10-point lead for Oceanside to end the third quarter being the largest for either squad, but the Mariners hit their free throws down the stretch — led by senior sharpshooter Jack Lombardo — as the hosts staved off Medomak Valley to pick up a regular season-ending 61-55 victory.

Lombardo paced Oceanside with 22 points — including 7-of-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter — to help hold off Medomak Valley.

Cooper Wirkala also racked up 21 points for the Mariners, while Trevor Reed and Amos Anderson added seven and Jaden Martin and Drew Daggett two. Anderson also hauled down 11 rebounds and Reed eight for the hosts.

Gabe Allaire led the Panthers with a 21-point effort, while Pat McKenney added 13; Trevor Brown and Ryan Creamer, six; Brandon Starr, four; Parker Morrison and Chris Bowman, two; and Jake Bickmore, one.

The Mariners were a blistering 21-of-24 (87 percent) from the foul line, while the Panthers were 12-of-21 (57 percent).

Oceanside took a quick 7-0 lead after a pair of Wirkala foul shots, a 3-pointer from Lombardo and another Wirkala basket from close range, but Medomak Valley would not relent and got several buckets in the stanza, none bigger than a trey by Starr as the buzzer sounded to knot the score 14-14.

The Panthers tied the score twice more in the second quarter — after a hoop from Bowman and later a pair of foul shots by Creamer — but the Mariners went on a 7-1 run to end the quarter and took a six-point lead into halftime.

Oceanside began to pull away in the third after a short jumper by Anderson gave the hosts their largest lead at eight points, but Wirkala hit the bench with his third foul with 4:25 to go in the quarter, which seemingly gave the Panthers a chance to prowl back into the game.

However, the squads went tit for tat throughout the rest of the stanza before Lombardo netted a leaner just before the buzzer to give the Mariners a 10-point cushion.

The Panthers did not go quietly as they went on an 8-2 run to start the quarter, led by a 3-pointer and a baseline hoop by Allaire and a coast-to-coast three-point play by Brown to bring the visitors within 47-43.

McKenney capitalized on a rare missed free throw by Wirkala and put up a one-handed floater in transition to bring Medomak Valley within 51-49 with a minute to play, but the Panthers were then forced to foul — and the Mariners hit their free throws — as the hosts, ultimately, held on for the victory.

The victory also earned Oceanside a berth in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship game, where it will face Maranacook of Readfield on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. at Cony High School in Augusta.
