Thomaston — The rivalry between Georges Valley and Rockland District high schools — for at least one night — was renewed on the hardwood on Wednesday, Nov. 22 as many began their holiday weekend a day early at the third annual Nathan Mitchell-William “Billy” Stinson Jr. Memorial Alumni Basketball Games.

Many former Tigers and Buccaneers — along with former Oceanside High School Mariners — were in action in the games held at Oceanside Middle School, which is the former GVHS building, to reconnect with old friends — and honor two others.

Stinson was a three-sport athlete for RDHS who died in a drunk driving accident on Oct. 30, 1993.

Mitchell was a student-athlete in Maine School Administrative District 50 — which included Thomaston, St. George and Cushing — who passed away in 2002 at age 15 of brain cancer.

Separate GVHS and RDHS alumni basketball games were held for years, but the merging of the two schools to form OHS eventually brought together the two communities in 2015 to join forces in an effort to raise money for college scholarships for future OHS graduates.

Over $2,100 was raised via admission fees, a 50-50 raffle, raffling donated items and a 3-point shootout at halftime of the men's game.

On Wednesday night, two games were on the docket, as the Rockland men posted a 70-54 win over Georges Valley, while the Buccaneer women netted a 52-38 victory over the Tigers.

A smattering of recent Mariner graduates also were in the mix on both sides in both contests.

While the women’s game was billed as Rockland versus Georges Valley, the teams were shuffled considerably prior to the opening tip due to a shortage of players. Only four former RDHS women’s players participated in the event.

Rosters for the teams, with graduation years listed in parentheses (those listed after 2012 are OHS graduates), were:

Georges Valley men — Lysha Smith (1999), Ronnie Porter (1977), Ben Tripp (1998), Travis Magnusson (2002), David Wilgus (2004), Jesse Wilgus (2005), Mark Chamberlin (2005), Tommy Rogers (2005), Jared Porter (2006), Thomas Woodman (2007), Brandon Staples (2008), Trevor Wilson (2008), Eli Thorbjornson (2014), Nick Judge (2014) and Sean Carlson (2005).
