Rockland — After a grueling three-day, single-elimination tournament, there is a new king of the hill in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League as No. 3 Tidewater Oil emerged with the coveted Allen T. Wilcox championship trophy.

Tidewater Oil (9-4) came out swinging early against top-seeded and defending league champion Rockland Ford (11-2) on Sunday afternoon, July 7 at Morrill Field and plated the first 11 runs in what had the looks of a mercy rule-style affair through the first three innings, but Rockland Ford showed the heart of a champion and made things close with a seven-run fourth.

However, the defending champs of the league for players ages 13-15 could not complete the comeback as Tidewater Oil swung to an 11-7 win and, ultimately, the league crown.

In the quarterfinals on Friday, July 5, No. 1 Rockland Ford beat No. 8 Granite Coast Orthodontics 10-9 in eight innings, No. 4 Damariscotta Lions beat No. 5 Union Farm Equipment 6-4, No. 2 Newcastle beat No. 7 Waldoboro 7-3 and No. 3 Tidewater Oil beat No. 6 P.G. Willey 3-0.

Then, in Saturday's semifinals, No. 1 Rockland Ford beat No. 4 Damariscotta Lions 10-6 and No. 3 Tidewater Oil beat No. 2 Newcastle 19-7 to set the stage for Sunday's title clash.

The final regular-season standings were: Rockland Ford 9-1, Newcastle 8-2, Tidewater Oil 6-4, Damariscotta Lions 6-4, Union Farm Equipment 4-6, Waldoboro 3-7, P.G. Willey 3-7 and Granite Coast Orthodontics 1-9. Tiebreakers were determined by head-to-head meetings.

Team members for the newly-crowned league champs, led by coach Matt Smith, include Zepherin Leppanen, Eamon Goscinski, Patrick McConnell, Declan Knowlton, Matt LeBlanc, Liam McConnell, Cody Reynolds, Elias Howard, Nate Ashey, Drew Abelon, Bobby Banks, Kayden Richards, Alec Rolfe, Jacoby Grotton and Curtis Littlefield.

Team members for Rockland Ford, led by coach Don Shields, include Taygan McAlliser, Austin Chilles, Landon Tabbutt, Gavin Ripley, Rhys Jones, Chase Allenwood, Zac Higgins, Duncan Oakes-Nelsen, Jacob Carroll, Alex Bartlett, Connor Calderwood, Max Bonzagni, Alec Sirois and Jason Leclerc.

In Sunday’s winner-take-all finale, Tidewater Oil scored the first 11 runs, as it tacked on four in the first inning, four in the second and three in the fourth, while Rockland Ford scored seven runs in the fourth frame.

Leading Tidewater Oil at the plate were Leppanen (triple, single, 2 runs), Goscinski (single, 3 runs, 3 stolen bases), Patrick McConnell (double, 3 singles, 2 runs, 4 stolen bases), LeBlanc (single, stolen base), Liam McConnell (single), Reynolds (single), Ashey (2 singles, run, stolen base) and Abelon (double, 2 runs, stolen base).

For Rockland Ford, Bartlett (2 singles, run, 2 RBIs), McAllister (single, run), Sirois (single, run), Calderwood (single, run), Oakes-Nelsen (RBI, run), Carroll (run), Tabbutt (single) and Jones (run, stolen base) paced the offense.

Knowlton, Grotton, Banks, Ashey and Reynolds toed the rubber for Tidewater Oil as the quintet yielded a combined six hits, seven walks and one hit batter, with five strikeouts.

Calderwood and Oakes-Nelsen pitched for Rockalnd Ford, as the duo scattered 13 hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts.

Tidewater Oil wasted little time getting on the board as they surged to a 4-0 lead in the first inning — keyed by a two-run single by Patrick McConnell — and continued its offensive onslaught in the second.

Ashey singled followed by a double to deep left by Abelon before Leppanen came through with a two-run single. Leppanen later scored on a wild pitch, while Patrick McConnell doubled in Goscinski to make the score 8-0.

In the fourth, Abelon drew a walk, stole second base and came in on an RBI-single by Leppanen, while Goscinski — who reached on a fielder’s choice — stole third base and came around after the throw to potentially pick him off trickled into the outfield as Tidewater Oil’s lead swelled to 10 runs.

An RBI-single by LeBlanc moments later made the score 11-0.

Rockland Ford did not go down without a fight, however, as it came away with seven runs in the fourth inning off only four hits as Tidewater Oil pitchers had trouble locating the strike zone from the mound.

Bartlett singled, McAllister drew a walk and Sirois singled to load the bases ahead of Calderwood and Oakes-Nelsen, whom each plated runs via a pair of bases-loaded walks. After Sirois scored on a passed ball, Leclerc drew a walk to reload the bases before Tabbutt drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 11-4.

Calderwood scored on a fielder’s choice and Chilles reloaded the bases with a walk ahead of Bartlett, who blooped a two-run single to make the score 11-7.

Rockland Ford again threatened in the fifth but could not score, while Reynolds came on in relief for the final two innings, and he retired all six batters he faced to help Tidewater Oil hold on for the league title.
