Warren — There were multiple injuries Thursday morning, Aug. 6, resulting from a serious multiple vehicle crash on Route 1 in Warren.

Before the crash, there were several calls made to both Knox and Lincoln County communication centers to report a white van traveling north on Route 1 from Waldoboro to Warren which was not staying in its lane, Knox County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Patrick Polky said.

A caller, on the line with Knox County communications, reported the crash as it occurred.

The crash is still under investigation but the preliminary information is that Burton Quimby, 69, of Warren, was operating a white 2008 Chevy cargo van north on Route 1, when he crossed the center line and struck three other vehicles all driving south. His van flipped and landed on its top in a ditch of the southbound lane.

Quimby was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a trauma center for serious injuries.

The vehicles struck were a silver 2020 Jeep, a Toyota Tacoma and a white 2013 Ford pickup truck. All operators and occupants were treated for minor injuries with two being taken to local hospitals.

All vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

While the crash is still under investigation, it is believed that Quimby was experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. near the intersection with North Pond Road.

The van had its front end smashed in and it was on its roof in a ditch on the west side of the road. A pickup truck was next to it in the ditch with substantial damage.

A Jeep was a few hundred feet south of those two vehicles, in the southbound lane with its rear axle missing.

There were multiple tires in the road.

Gus Wellman, who lives near the crash site, said he heard a loud crash followed a few seconds later by a second loud crash.

Thomaston, Waldoboro and Warren emergency crews along with the Sheriff's Office were at the scene.
