Waldoboro — There has been no better Midcoast high school athletic rivalries over the years than the one between the Medomak Valley and Oceanside softball teams.

Exciting regional playoff and conference championship games, walkoff hits and nail-biting finishes.

The Friday, April 23 chapter in the rivalry between the Panthers and Mariners — the season-opening contest for Medomak Valley after it lost the 2020 season due to COVID-19 — was far from the norm of the typically outstanding tooth-and-nail battle.

The Mariners, who have started the new campaign with two losses, plated the first run of the game, but battled control problems in the pitching circle all afternoon. That, coupled with the Panthers’ patience at the plate, saw the hosts prowl to a lopsided, 29-3, five-inning victory.

The majority of Medomak Valley’s runs came in on bases-loaded walks, wild pitches, passed balls and errors by Oceanside, as the Panthers made the Mariners pay for each and every one.

The hosts scored seven runs in the first inning, six in the second, seven in the third and nine in the fourth, while the visitors scored one in the first and two in the fifth.

The Panther offense was paced by Aly Creamer (single, 4 runs, 2 RBIs), Hannah Lee (run), Sara Nelson (2 runs, RBI), Natalie Stewart (single, run), Eliza Spear (single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Lucy Jameson (run), Madison Boynton (single, run), Emily Harris (3 runs, RBI), Stephanie Morse (3 runs, RBI), Grace White (2 runs, RBI), Haley Puchalski (2 runs, RBI), Belle LaFrance (2 runs, 2 RBIs), Addison McCormick (single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Emma Kunesh (run) and Eliza Nelson (2 runs, RBI).

For the Mariners, Grace Pratt (2 runs, stolen base), Jessica Watkinson (single, RBI), Grace Woodman (single) and Madison Benner (single, run) led the offense.

Creamer pitched for Medomak Valley and twirled a three-hitter against Oceanside, as she yielded no walks and struck out 11.

Oceanside had five pitchers on the afternoon — Pratt, Adrianna Whitamore, Haley Tufts, Maddie Ripley and Lexi Knowlton — who combined to allow five hits, 23 walks and six hit batters, to go with 10 strikeouts.
