The Sweetback Sisters, back at Strand

Emily Miller, left, and Zara Bode bring The Sweetback Sisters’ Country Christmas Sing-Along Spectacular to the Midcoast.

Rockland — The Sweetback Sisters, fronted by Emily Miller and Zara Bode, will bring their irresistible brand of holiday cheer to the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., on Friday, Dec. 7. The band’s Country Christmas Sing-Along Spectacular starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Sweetback Sisters, known for their own blend of vintage honkytonk, western swing and Tex-Mex styles, bring the holidays to life with vaudevillian theatrics reminiscent of TV variety shows of the 1950s and ‘60s. This wildly popular show delivers a veritable explosion of yuletide splendor, complete with trivia, prizes and, of course, all the holiday tunes you know and love. Songbooks and warm fuzzy feelings are provided.

Technically speaking, The Sweetback Sisters come from Brooklyn — and the frontwomen are not sisters. Philosophically, they hail from a parallel universe, an alternate timeline in which honky-tonk became the dominant sound in modern country music. Centered around the charismatic vocal interplay of Miller and Bode, the remarkably versatile band on this tour also features guitarist Ross Bellenoit, Darby Wolf on keyboards, Charlie Muench of the Stray Birds on bass and drummer Stefan Amidon.

The band’s latest recording, “King Of Killing Time,” pushes its timely take on country’s golden age into more adventurous territory than ever before with a mix of infectious originals and unexpected interpretations of everything from George Jones to Gram Parsons. Hints of jazz and ragtime flesh out the group’s unique brand of Americana.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Lobby and balcony bars will be open for those age 21 and older. For more information, visit rocklandstrand.com; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email info@rocklandstrand.com.
