Boothbay Harbor — “Are you ready?” said Ellsworth coach and pitcher Todd Wagstaff to Medomak Valley’s Myles Frederick, at the plate awaiting the pitch.

“Make it happen!” the youngster said.

Frederick did just that — as did several other players — on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25-26 at the second annual Maine State Challenger Jamboree at Boothbay Region High School as players from Ellsworth to South Portland, and many in-between, swung bats, snared grounders and threw balls throughout the weekend-long event.

The jamboree was presented by District 2 Little League and hosted by Lincoln Little League.

The Challenger Division of Little League is made up of players ages 4 to 22 with developmental and physical disabilities. Those disabilities, of course, can vary and can include those of a physical, mental or emotional nature, or a combination of the three.

However, the division gives each youngster — or youngster at heart — the opportunity to swing a bat, throw a ball or run the bases.

In attendance were teams from Oceanside, Medomak Valley, Ellsworth, South Portland and host Lincoln.

“I thought the day went very well,” said District 2 Little League Commissioner Dana Verge. “On the whole I thought they did an excellent job. Paul Miner who headed it up did a superb job and all the help from Boothbay and Damariscotta as well.”

"It was great getting to know new players and play against a team we hadn't seen," said Oceanside coach Katie Marchessault. "I'm always impressed with how supportive and helpful all the volunteers are. It was a great venue with welcoming volunteers and from what I saw all the players and buddies were having a great time."

The event began with two games on two fields as Medomak/Oceanside/South Portland — which combined teams due to smaller numbers — faced one Ellsworth team, while the second Ellsworth team competed against Lincoln.

Subway provided lunch, while a barbecue dinner was served at night, with a bevy of various activities on the docket throughout the day.

While the Challenger players were the focus of the weekend, there were other exciting moments, such as Wally the Green Monster — the mascot of the Boston Red Sox — who traveled to the event to take photos with players and fans.

Saturday’s events ended with two more games under the lights, while Ellsworth and Lincoln played a third game on Sunday morning.

“I thought it was very, very well run,” said Verge.

The teams include players and buddies who assist them.

Team members, players and buddies, for Oceanside (not all of whom participated in the jamboree), coached by Kayla Fairfield, Katie Marchessault and Caitlin Raye, include Colette Black, Malachi Fairfield, Henry Fairfield, Evelyn Fairfield, Corbin Farnham, Brian Farnham, Trey Johnson, Brady Marchessault, Alayna Marchessault, Taygan McAllister, Paden Robbins, Sophia Wilmot and Sebastian Wilmot.

Team members, players and buddies, for Medomak, coached by Paul Smeltzer, include Myles Frederick and Noah Masicotte.

Area Challenger players also got a chance to take the field during an old-timer's baseball game on Sunday, July 8 on Dow Field in Waldoboro.
