The community-owned Belfast Co-op is once again partnering with the Northport Food Pantry this holiday season to provide healthful food to our neighbors in need.  Monetary donations of any amount are welcomed at the store registers to purchase wholesome food, including organic local apples, potatoes, onions & carrots, along with organic canned vegetables, stuffing mix, pumpkin pie filling & pie shells, and cranberry sauce for the Food Pantry to distribute along with turkeys during this Thanksgiving holiday season.  The Co-op will match all contributions.

Maine has the 4th highest rate of hunger in the nation and the highest in New England with over 200,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity.  A new USDA report released this past September ranked Maine 3rd in the nation for “very low food security” — which means that a household endured multiple instances of hunger in the past month.  As public assistance for low-income people declines, food pantries have had to take up the burden.

Please help us spread some holiday cheer during this harvest season!  The community owned Belfast Co-op, open 7:30am-8pm daily, is located at 123 High Street in downtown Belfast.  For more information:  (207) 338-2532, belfast.coop
