From the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Events Coordinator Kasey Bielecki,

Question: How do you host a fun, engaging, event and fundraiser during a worldwide pandemic?

The answer? Host a Tail-a-thon! This Saturday, Aug. 1, from 2 to 7 p.m., we want you to set some time aside to tune into the Pope Memorial Humane Society Facebook page for our first-ever Tail-a-thon. Use a phone, laptop, tablet, whichever! Here's a secret, nobody even needs to have a Facebook account to tune in! Shh.

So what is a Tail-a-thon? The PMHS Tail-a-thon is an old-school telethon with a new school twist. In an effort to stay socially distanced, have fun, raise awareness for local homeless pets and raise much-needed funds for Pope Memorial Humane Society. Staff and volunteers will come together for five hours of shenanigans and heartfelt moments and we want you to tune in.

What can you expect?

  • Heidi from Loyal Biscuit doing a segment on stuffed dog treats.
  • Original MTV VJ, Nina Blackwood, MC’ing the shelter pet parade.
  • A fun cooking segment using a local recipe that you can make at home.
  • Story time for those who love a great read. We recommend tuning in with a furry friend.
  • Program and service updates.
  • Name the cat breed – what exactly is a Maine Coon Cat?
  • Ask the shelter manager.
  • Pledge to Pie. This means a pie in the face of shelter leaders!
  • Adoption updates.
  • A super cool raffle.
  • Favorite stories from the shelter.
  • Puppy playpen visits.
  • Kitten playpen visits.
  • And more!

Want to stop by in person with a donation? Shepard Auto will be at the shelter with a truck and the goal to stuff the truck for local homeless pets in need. Dry kitten chow, cleaning supplies, trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels, 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper, and all high demand items.

No donation is too small! Anyone can the shelter Saturday, Aug. 1 between 2 and 7 p.m. to make a donation over the phone; operators will be standing by! Additionally, you will be able to donate through Facebook. Facebook does not charge any processing fees. You can even text to donate!

I look forward to the day when events are back at full capacity. In the meantime, let’s make the best of a not so great situation. Let’s have some fun, celebrate all the good work Pope Memorial Humane Society is doing, and raise some money to make a difference in the lives of local homeless pets in need. Together we can make a difference!

Wish list: pate-style chicken recipe canned cat food, cleaning supplies, gift certificates to Hannaford, Walmart and other local businesses.
