Rockland — Zola, also known as Super Zola, led the pack to take the 2017 Boatyard Dog Trial title.

The 2-1/2-year-old Labrador retriever donned a superhero costume along with her owner Nancy Holmes of Cushing. Zola managed to make her way through maritime obstacles and dove off the floats in Rockland Harbor to retrieve a Frisbee and balls.

Zola's antics impressed the judges, who were in a boat near the float.

Zola bested three other dogs to win the title that is one of the draws for the annual Maine Boats, Homes & Harbor Show held at Rockland Harbor Park.

In her biography, Zola reports she entertains the lobstermen in her town by "fearlessly flying off the float to retrieve my tennis balls."

Also competing this year for top dog were Cargo P. Cargo and owner Louise MacLellan-Ruf of Rockland, Jester from Waldoboro, and Kenzie from Warren.
