Belfast — With precious early-season victories on the line — a second for Oceanside and first for Belfast — the Mariners and host Lions were locked in a fairly competitive game for the first 16 minutes on Saturday night, Dec. 29.

However, the visitors simply overwhelmed the undermanned Lions in the second half en route to a relatively easy victory.

The Mariners sailed to a fast 16-5 advantage and appeared in control before the Lions put a small dent in their deficit, as the hosts trailed 25-16 at halftime.

That appeared, at first glance to leave Belfast within striking distance but, as it turned out, that was a mirage as the Mariners, as they had done in the first quarter, turned it on over the final 16 minutes to secure a 62-28 win.

The Mariners, who outscored the Lions 37-12 in the second half, led 40-20 at the end of three quarters.

For Oceanside, Grace Woodman led the charge with 16 points, while Abby Veilleux added 11; Raechel Joyce, Kalli Grover and Hope Butler, nine; Molly Gould, six; and Sara Dorr, two.

The squad netted 14-of-20 foul shots (70 percent), including 6-of-6 from Grover, and six 3-pointers, including two from Butler and Woodman and one from Joyce and Grover.

Gould (11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots), Veilleux (8 rebounds), Woodman (3 rebounds, 2 steals), Katherine Freeman (4 rebounds), Grover (7 rebounds), Joyce (5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Dorr (3 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 blocks) also had strong statistical efforts.

For Belfast, who played without several players, including injured starters Kayci Faulkingham and Junne Robertson-McIntire, Grace Fitzjurls led the charge with eight points; Kiara Doolan and Lillie Mitchell, seven; Sydni Moores, three; Hailee Lindelof, two; and Madison Farrison, one. The squad made 9-of-26 free throws (35 percent) and got its lone trey from Mitchell.

Oceanside grabbed early control with 16 first-quarter points, as Butler led the charge with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Dorr, Joyce, Veilleux and Gould also had hoops to buoyed the visitors. Doolan and Mitchell carried the torch offensively for the hosts in the early going.

The Lions made the game a bit more interesting with a solid second quarter that included six points from Fitzjurls and five combined free throws from Moores and Fitzjurls.

However, the pesky, aggressive Mariners had too much firepower for the depleted Lions over the final 16 minutes as Woodman came alive for 14 points, including 12 in the fourth stanza, as Joyce and Veilleux added seven and the visitors made 12-of-18 free throws (67 percent) in the second half.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (2-4, 3.0247) is ninth and Belfast (0-6, no points) tied for 13th. Waterville (6-0, 18.3333 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
