Strand Drive-In Movies open with 'Super 8'

Film still from "Super 8."

OWLS HEAD/ROCKLAND — The Strand Theatre, in partnership with the Owls Head Transportation Museum, will show Drive-In Movies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights throughout July at the museum campus. Showtime will be at 8:30 p.m. each night, with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. "Super 8," a sci-fi thriller from Stephen Spielberg, will show on the opening weekend, July 9, 10 and 11.

"Super 8," directed by J.J. Abrams, is set in the summer of 1979. A group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local deputy tries to uncover the truth — something more terrifying.

"Super 8" stars Elle Fanning, AJ Michalka, and Kyle Chandler, and is rated PG-13.

Tickets are $20 per car, and will be available starting at 2 p.m. each day for that evening’s show. Tickets can be purchased on the Strand Theatre website, or by calling 594-0070 between 2 and 4 p.m. Availability is limited, so movie-goers are encouraged to buy their tickets early to guarantee their spot.

“The heart and soul of the Strand is our community, so while the theater doors are temporarily closed due to the virus pandemic, we've been working to create ways to continue to serve our friends and neighbors,” said Strand Executive Director Jessie Davis. “And it's in that spirit of community that we are so thrilled to offer the Strand Drive-in as a safe and fun way for folks to take a break from the world for a few hours and come together, in our cars under the stars!”

Multiple safety measures will be in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19; all staff will wear face masks at all times, patrons must stay in their cars to watch the movie, and cars will be spaced 6 feet apart. A full list of the planned safety precautions can be found on the Strand Theatre website.

Though a concession stand will not be available, a complimentary bag of popcorn will go to each carload, and attendees are welcome to bring their own snacks. Film audio will be broadcast over FM radio on 87.9 FM; movie-goers can listen with their car radios or with a portable radio.

Rain cancellations will be decided by 2 p.m. on show days. If a cancellation must happen after that time, ticket buyers will be refunded.
