WEATHER CANCELLATIONS, DELAYS

Storm to bring snow and ice Tuesday

Feb 15, 2021

Our next winter storm is moving in that will make for hazardous travel conditions on Tuesday with a round of snow followed by an icy mix. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for southern portions of Maine from 11pm Monday until 7pm Tuesday while a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for northern sections and the mountains of western Maine.

Low pressure located over the Southeast U.S. Monday afternoon that will track north and east overnight reaching southern New England by daybreak on Tuesday. This will push of swath of snow into Maine from southwest to northeast after midnight that will continue through Tuesday morning. Snow will undergo a transition to sleet and freezing rain along the coast starting around sunrise Tuesday and push further inland through the morning hours as warm air moves in aloft over cold (sub freezing) air at the surface. This will result in light ice accumulations on top of the layer of snow that fell overnight. Low pressure will track along the Maine coast through the afternoon then exit east into the early night with precipitation gradually subsiding through the afternoon and evening.

Snowfall amounts before the changeover to mix will range between 1" to 3" along the coast with 3" to 6" for central Maine and higher amounts north and in the mountains (see map). Icing potential will be greatest south of a line from approximately Bangor to Lewiston with 1/10" to 1/4" of sleet and 1/10" to 1/4" of freezing rain possible. This will make for slick roads and may result in isolated power outages with downed limbs or trees.

We'll see sunshine returning Wednesday with lows around 20 and highs in the mid to upper 20s.

As of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Central Maine Power was reporting no outages in Knox and Waldo counties.
