Stokes heads to the Strand

Jan 04, 2019
Chadwick Stokes and The Pintos, who headlined First Night Boston, are pushing their way north to Rockland.

Rockland — Chadwick Stokes — aka Chad Urmston, lead singer/songwriter for the bands Dispatch and State Radio — will appear with The Pintos Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St. Contemporary folk singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale will open the show.

Stokes’ music is hard to categorize and spans indie folk, roots rock, reggae fusion and rap rock. Since forming his first band with two college friends in 1996, Stokes has paved a path of independence, advocacy and social consciousness that has impacted every aspect of his artistic life. In addition to fronting the bands State Radio and Dispatch, he is a co-founder of Calling All Crows, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing bands and fans together to create change through hands-on service and activism.

“I’ve had a batch of tunes for a while that we’ve been playing but I wanted to get in another live run to make sure the songs are ready to record. Joining me are my mates JR (drums), brother Willy (banjo) and Tommy (bass),” he said of his winter tour of the Northeast. “We’ll be trying out the songs in different forms to see what works. We’ve also messed around with Dispatch and State Radio tunes and at least three or four songs from ‘Simmerkane II.’”

A Here For The Music training session will take place at the Strand Theatre just prior to doors-open time (from about 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.). It is open to anyone who wants to learn different ways of dealing with sexual harassment (whether experiencing it yourself or observing something happening). Sign-ups are available via the link at bit.ly/chadwicktrainings. This link also can be found on the Strand Theatre website and Facebook pages.

Annibale released her first full-length album at age 17. In her most recent release, “Hold to the Light,” she transcends the labels of folk, indie rock and pop to make music that is entirely of her own creation.

Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Lobby and balcony bars will be open for those age 21 and older. For more information, visit rocklandstrand.com; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email info@rocklandstrand.com.
