State champion Huskies take bite out of Panthers in lopsided affair

By Staff | Sep 11, 2018

Pittsfield — For the past two seasons, the Maine Central Institute football team has ended its campaign winning its final high school game, last season as state Class C champions and the year prior the state Class D crown.

Thus, Medomak Valley players and coaches understood its hands would not only be full, but overloaded with the talented Huskies as the squads squared off on Friday night, Sept. 7 at MCI’s homecoming game at Alumni Field.

The Huskies scored early and often, capitalizing on Panther turnovers and the visitors’ defense on their way to a lopsided 63-0 score.

MCI held a 35-0 advantage at halftime.

Eli Miller led Medomak Valley with 35 yards of offense.

On defense, the Panthers were led by Miller (5 solo tackles), Elijah Lash (3.5 tackles, quarterback sack) and Amos Hinkley (4.5 tackles, sack).

"It's obviously a very humbling loss for us, but the kids know there are two directions we can go from this," said Panther coach Ryan Snell. "So that remains to be seen. MCI had been shut out the week before by Leavitt, so they came into this game [their homecoming] hungry and looking to prove a point."

Ryan Friend threw for a pair of touchdown passes to Andrew Whitaker and ran for two scores of 60 and nine yards to pace MCI.

Nason Berthelette relieved Friend under center in the second half and threw a touchdown pass to Gavin McArthur and also rushed for a score for the Huskies.

Isaac Bussell also returned an interception for a score — one of four first-half interceptions — to pace the MCI defense.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Medomak Valley (0-2, no points) is 11th, while Oceanside of Rockland (1-1, 9.3750 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
