Camden — Local author Susan St. John will speak about her memoir and on Protecting Nature in Maine’s Coastal Waters as the second presentation of this summer’s Sunset Seminar Series at the Camden Yacht Club, 68 Bay View St., Wednesday, July 18, at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public; donations at the door are welcome for the nonprofit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program.

St. John was a sea instructor for 30 years with the Outward Bound School, then based on Hurricane Island. She taught teens, women older than 30, families, executives and Vietnam veterans on land, but 90 percent of the time was in the pulling boats. St. John will show slides and speak about experiential education, including her experiences at Outward Bound and creating the book “To Sail Beyond the Sunset,” which contains stories and photographs from 100 people associated with the school.

St. John lives in Owls Head in the house she designed and built 40 years ago for her late husband, Bob Rheault, with whom she worked at Hurricane Island. There they raised their now-grown children, Nicholas and Alexis St. John-Rheault. “To Sail Beyond the Sunset” is her first book.
