Split decision for Windjammers in first games with Cougars

Camden Hills baseball in control late, softball cannot keep pace with mighty Mount Blue

Rockport — The Camden Hills baseball and softball teams opened the season amidst sunny, spring conditions — finally — against Mount Blue of Farmington, as the Windjammers split with the visiting Cougars.

The Windjammer baseball team pulled away from the Cougars late on its way to a 6-1 victory, while the Windjammer softball squad could not hold back the potent Cougar offense and were downed 20-2 in five innings.

Baseball

Camden Hills 6, Mount Blue 1

At Rockport April 17, the Windjammers pulled away from the Cougars with a three-run sixth inning and secured their first win of the campaign. Camden Hills also scored in the first, second and fourth frames, while Mount Blue scored its lone run in the fourth.

Leading Camden Hills at the plate were Nathaniel Johnson (single, 2 runs, stolen base), Matt Kremin (double, 2 singles, run), Aidan Schecter (run), Jason Greenleaf (single, run) and Obie Miller (double, single, run).

For Mount Blue, John Bell (single), Hunter Meeks (single, run), Kyle Fox (single) and Wyatt Viles (single, stolen base) paced the offense.

Logan Putansu and Spencer Johndro pitched for the Windjammers, as the duo allowed four hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts. Jackson Joyce pitched for the Cougars, as he allowed seven hits and six walks, with two strikeouts.

Softball

Mount Blue 20, Camden Hills 2 (5 inns.)

At Rockport April 17, the Cougars put on an offensive clinic en route to a mercy-rule win over the host Windjammers. Mount Blue scored nine runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and nine more in the fifth, while Camden Hills scored in the second and fourth frames.

Leading the Windjammers at the dish were Kennedy Peterson (single), Alyssa Bland (single), Amanda McFarland (2 singles, 2 runs, 3 stolen bases), Olivia Brown (single, 2 stolen bases), Hollie Hutcheson (single, stolen base) and Maggie Blemaster (single).

For the Cougars, Angela Guppy (double, single, 3 runs), Rylee Briggs (triple, double, single, 3 runs), Eva-Marie Stevens (single, 2 runs), Aislynn Provencher (single, 3 runs), Jacelyn Daggett (3 singles, 2 runs), Ashley Wiles (3 singles, 2 runs), Madisyn Smith (2 singles, 2 runs), Gianna Kennedy (single, run) and Wylie Post (double, 2 runs) paced the offense.

Lillia Stone and Olivia Brown pitched for Camden Hills, as the tandem allowed 17 hits and eight walks, with two strikeouts. Smith pitched for Mount Blue, as she allowed seven hits and three walks, with six strikeouts.
